There are several different types of troops. Some such as Melee and Ranged only denotes how the unit attacks and don’t carry any inherent modifiers while others such as Ethereal or Large have modifiers that effect the troops in battle.
Melee Units attack the nearest enemy units in battle, it has no inherent special effect or modifiers.
Ranged Units attack units at random regardless of their position on the battlefield. Like Melee it carries no inherent effects or modifiers.
Mounted units are all cavalry units regardless of what beast they ride – Horse, Ram, Goat, Warg etc. It carries the following modifier which can be upgraded 10 times using gold.

Large units are exclusively for the Evil factions – Angmar, Mordor, Isenguard & Rhûn. It carries the following modifier which can be upgraded 10 times using gold.

Flying units are available for both Evil and Good Factions from mercenary camps. They carry the following modifiers with the damage reduction being upgradable 10 times using gold –

Ethereal units avoid ALL physical damage, however, cannot be healed.
Tree-folk units have a very powerful modifier that is both positive and negative and cannot be upgraded.
