After a short respite in Rivendell, the Fellowship of the Ring is formed with a single goal: destroy the One Ring in Mordor. Their journey soon takes them beneath the Misty Mountains into the once great kingdom of Khazad-dûm. In Balin’s Tomb, Pippin’s careless curiosity echoes throughout the depths of Moria, alerting the enemy.

The Fellowship fends off the attackers, but more are sure to come. With no way of knowing how many goblins, orcs, or trolls may be on the way, the group descends into the depths of Moria to escape.
The Fellowship descends into the abandoned mithril mines to escape the goblins that now call Moria home.

A Balrog of Morgoth. This is too great a foe for any of you. Run, now, to the bridge!
Legolas
I’ll cover our flanks!
On the bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf the Grey stands alone before Durin’s Bane. The Balrog takes a step toward the wizard, but the bridge crumbles under its weight. As it falls, the creature cracks its fiery whip, ensnaring Gandalf’s ankle and dragging him into the abyss. The Fellowship has no time to mourn as more goblins arrive to keep up the attack. Heartbroken, they escape the Dwarven kingdom and race towards Lórien, the Elven domain of Galadriel.

Gandalf the Grey has not met his fate just yet. Despite falling into the depths of Moria, he continues to battle Durin’s Bane, the great Balrog of Morgoth. Ultimately, they climb the Endless Stair to the mountain peak, Zirakzigil, where the wizard prepares to have one last stand against his old enemy atop Durin’s Tower.

There is no place in this world for the likes of you, Balrog. Your Master is gone, the age of men is upon us, and you will not be part of it!
With one final blow Gandalf strikes down Durin’s Bane, toppling the Balrog from the mountain’s peak. Exhausted, the Wizard lay on the ground, his life ebbing away with each halting breath. This is the end for Gandalf the Grey.
