After having been freed by Gandalf the White from Saruman's influence, King Théoden decides to move the people of Edoras to safety, fearing imminent attack. They are headed to the fortress of Helm's Deep when suddenly an enemy is spotted at a distance.

The Warg-riders sent by Saruman are disposed of, but friendly losses are substantial, and Aragorn is nowhere to be found. Sharku, with his dying breath, reveals that the ranger fell off a cliff, dragged off by a Warg. With immense bitterness in their hearts, Théoden, Gimli, and Legolas make their way to Helm’s Deep.
